Plug-Ins & Hacks I Use in WordPress Blogs

While plug-ins for the WordPress blogging platform are in abundant supply, I try not to depend on too many of them due to the fact that I don’t want to have to worry about them breaking every time a new version of WordPress is released. That being said, there are four plug-ins as well as one adjustment to the post template itself that I feel are essential in order to have a great WordPress experience.

They are as follows:

  • Dofollow – Allows you to remove “evil nofollow attribute” from your comments.
  • SEO Title Tag – Makes is easy to optimize or customize title tags across your WordPress-powered
    blog.
  • WP MobileA nifty plug-in creates a PDA friendly interface for your blog.
  • WordPress Automatic UpgradeAutomatically upgrades your WordPress version to the latest files provided using the 5 steps provided in the upgrade instructions.
  • Customizing the “Read More Tag – Not a plug-in but more of an “adjustment” to the functionality of WordPress that allows you to customize the “read more” function.

I have written about these in greater detail in a post at Search Engine Guide entitled “(My) Essential Plug-Ins for WordPress Blogs.

  1. As far as plugin choices…. I’ve got two issues here.

    1. SEO Title Tag… this is something that all-in-one-seo can do as well as other items without being a bloated plugin. It never breaks with updates (that i’ve seen since about v1.6) The other thing that concerns me is the plugins site says “adds compatibility with WordPress 2.7″… um 2.8 is out a week ago? hello? Just bothers me when plugins aren’t on top of the latest happenings

    2. Automatic upgrade plugin… I know a lot of people are usin it but I’ve heard some horror stories and have had to help some people out because the plugin botched something. I assume for beginners it’s easy and painless… but I’d rather have some control over it. Upgrading is so easy and I usually handle that for all my clients anyways. I’d say don’t be surprised if it breaks and don’t rely on an automatic thing lol… they break.

    Cheers
