In my experience they do intersect but only so much because they are, fundamentally, quite different.

I could never see social media replacing search or vice-versa. Search compliments SM, but I am not sure the reverse is true so-much.

Additionally, search traffic is immediately targeted, whereas traffic from social media is targeted only after nurturing it. It is a very slow process and requires just as much SMO as search does SEO.

As you stated social media is an will continue to be a potential source of traffic that cannot be ignored. In the end, search is for selling, and as you pointed out, SM is for branding.

Search is here to stay. The power of social media is undoubtedly being recognized but it will take time to fully comprehend the role it is likely to play as the medium itself evolves.
All that one can say with some conviction at this point is that social media supplements search and it undoubtedly has value for SEO.

I think social media supplement search. Frankly, even if your experience shows that search is essential, companies still cannot ignore one for the other.

Very interesting research done on this subject. I definitely think that both of them are connected to each other. I think it's kinda funny now that companies don't want to have a blog or facebook page or Twitter account. Are you kidding me? They really can't comprehend how much traffic and money they may be missing out on.

Nice research and explanation! I would say in this era of internet marketing both are important. Also by using blend of both of it you can gain in search engine and also you can get some direct marketing for your website/company. When comparing both head by head, search engine plays a way long vital role ahead of social media. you can think of now a days internet user who, after opening internet browser, without thinking anything first go to google.com this shows the power of seach. anyways really nice discussed topic. thanx for sharing!

Both are interconnected with each other. They build on each other. But like hostgator coupon said, Search is still the main bringer of traffic.

Yes, they do mix and compliment each other, but search is still the biggest provider of traffic. Whether that traffic is as relevant as social media traffic is another matter.

Going forward the social web is only going to expand and search will probably change to include more social results than it currently does.
