Social news site, Mixx, is beginning to implement monetization strategies with its introduction of "Sifter." Accessible by a blue button in the top navigational menu, Sifter is a place where companies pay Mixx to display different types of creative — banner ads, new product designs, movie trailers, etc. — and then get feedback from real people on those ads — often before they see the light of day in any other forum.

It's hard to believe that Mixx is already one year old. The better-than-Digg- alternative to Digg has experienced a lot of growth in that time as well. Thanks to the growing Mixx community, they have seen the number of visitors grow 500%. Mixx now gets more than 4 million unique visitors each month!

In a post on the official Mixx blog, the social news site is happy to remind its community why it is different from the other guys out there.

Mixx announces today that they are taking their mantra of ultra-personalization to a whole new level with the launch of Mixx Communities. These Communities, described as "Mixx Groups on steroids," are much like the Groups function you may or may not already be using, however Communities allows you to "customize" by importing an image header and/or logo, choosing a custom color scheme, and determining specific topics and categories to include. They are almost like custom Mixx sites within the larger Mixx portal.

It appears that Mixx has rolled out some new features through the night - the main one being that you can now edit stories and comments on the Mixx social news site. There is one catch - you have just 15 minutes to do it. However, this is a great feature as I don't know how many times I have hit the submit button and then regretted my impatience because I had listed something incorrectly.

Mixx has added a new feature to help get stories that are considered "breaking" to the "Popular" page faster. The feature is called "Breaking News" and is only accessible to Super Mixxers. Breaking news stories can become popular just like any other story, but they gain additional visibility since the Breaking News category is visible on Mixx’s “Popular” page. As an additional check, one Super Mixxer is not enough -- it takes two to Mixx a Breaking News story.

Social news site, Mixx must be getting more popular. I am seeing a lot of spam recently, mostly of the kind where people are submitting stories to multiple categories. Now there may be times where this is justified, however in most of the cases I have seen, it is nothing but spam. I can only assume people are doing this to try to gain additional exposure for their submissions but in the end all it really does is make a lot of noise.
