It is a question I pondered a while back – does a link from the MySpace.com domain hold any special link juice powers? In other words, if one has a link with specific anchor text pointing to a web site, will that link alone help them to rank well for the same phrase?

The answer is yes… and no. A yes on MSN and but a big no on Google and Yahoo. Let me explain.

In April of this year, I set up a SearchRank profile on MySpace and decided to conduct a little experiment. I took a phrase that did not return any search results on Google, Yahoo and MSN and placed it within the “About Me” section of my MySpace and linked it to a specific site with the goal of being able to bring that site up in the SERPs (search engine results pages) for that phrase.

The phrase – stupid dipwop. The site – Justin Timberlake’s official site. The results – a search for “stupid dipwop” at Google only brings up some random MySpace page, at Yahoo brings up my SearchRank MySpace profile but at MSN brings up Justin’s page as number two result.

Seeing that MSN is still in such an infancy state, I have to stop short of saying that MySpace has any real link juice power. Well it is obvious that it does for MSN but a strike out for Google and Yahoo.

While there are many sites that can pass powerful link juice, in my experiment, MYSpace is not one of them, at least for two of the three major engines. If anyone has found otherwise, I’d love to hear your example.
