I find the whole "Google is anti paid search" theory very curious. On one hand, Google says openly that they are anti paid link, but on the other hand, there are several notable companies that sell links. Some of the paid links are clearly trackable (meaning Googlebot should be able to identify them), and in some cases, the companies have open testimonials which would lead Google to some possible sites using paid links.

I know they outed some big sites earlier this year, but overall, I guess it seems like something does not add up. I have stayed away from using them for fear that I will be the example, but in some cases, I know we lose business on the link building side to those who are reselling paid links because doing the work of manual link building is tedious and time consuming. The upside is that I personally enjoy the challenges of link building, especially in competitive markets, so it's rewarding to do the work and see the results and have your clients appreciate it.

Hi David,

nice post, nice title, altough I miss a bit detail on the the point that addresses the title - DO they still work?

The whole post - to be frank - reminds me a bit on my work from 2009 - but then - these are generic rules and still apply, so... :)

I do however like how you address "paid link" specifics like the obvious "Sponsored Link" tag you find so often (when looking at competitors links)

Thanks & cheers from chilly Vienna, Austria
